Below are some useful information that can be used in learning materials science.

General

Materials Science

  • DoITPoMS Nice and clear instruction for terminalogies in materials science. Very good illustration and animations.
  • LibreTexts Chemistry Very broad knowledge and free e-chemistry textbook.
  • Peter Atkins, Julio de Paula, and James Keeler, Atkin’s Physical Chemistry 12th Edition, Oxford University Press, 2022

Statistical Mechanics

Statistical mechanics can be very hard in condensed matter physics. In materials science lectures, topics should be selected carefully.

  • A. M. Glazer, Statistical Mechanics: A Survival Guide, Oxford University Press, 2001. Easiest and most understandable book for statistical mechanics
  • Werner Krauth, Statistical Mechanics: Algorithms and Computations, Oxford University Press, 2006. Very nice book focused on Monte Carlo simulation. They also have a highly rated Coursera course.

Solid-State Physics

Solid-state physics is a very broad and actively evolving field. It is very difficult for author to be the expert in all of its subfields. Therefore, it is highly recommended to study this course by referring to many text books. I found the Oxford Master Series in Physics is very helpful. Below are just some general introductory books of solid-state physics.

  • Simon H. Steven, The Oxford Solid State Basics, Oxford University Press, 2013. Best solid state physics book for introductory level.
  • Neil W. Ashcroft and N. David Mermin, Solid State Physics, Cengage Learning, 1976. Very nice introductory book but a bit outdated now.
  • Marvin L. Cohen and Steven G. Louie, Fundamentals of Condensed Matter Physics, Cambridge University Press, 2016. A very nice advanced level textbook.

Simulation

Electronic structure is super hard to understand. Therefore, I only include the introductory level books here. More advanced books such as Electronic Structure (Richard Martin) are not included here.
