Getting a computer
Our group can provide you a laptop. It is highly encouraged to use MacBook as it facilitates other group members helping you if you run into problems. Configurations should be reasonable - mid-range CPU and good RAM, a SSD. Send your proposed configuration for approval before purchase and contact Procurement Officer for purchase.
Use used laptops first
Our group has accumulated lots of used MacBooks and most of them are in pretty good conditions and performance. Please use them first before buying new laptops. We will keep getting new laptops when the old devices are too old.
If you prefer Windows and Linux PC
Windows and Linux PC is acceptable. However, based on our previous experience, MacBook provides Microsoft Office, a native command line environment, high build quality, and super good battery life, so most people chose MacBook.
Group assets
Please note that all computers and laptops purchased with group funds are group assets. These are tagged with a university asset number and will be checked every year by the university. You are responsible for the computer and its accessories (e.g. charger, dongle, etc.) while you are using it. You should not sell or give them to others without permission from the group. If you leave the group, you should return the computer to the group. Check Leaving-the-Group for more details.
